Why are you cast down, my soul? Psalm 42:5 & 42:11 & 43:5

Three times David cries out to God. Three times David’s situation made him feel helpless. Three times he proclaimed his hope in God: Hope in God means, I shall yet praise Him, the help of His countenance and my God. Psalm 42:5 & 43:5. In Psalm 42:11 David looks for help from God for his own countenance. Not once, but three times David went to God for assurance of his deliverance from depression birthed from grief. Three times our Lord went to the Father for help. Here are two great examples of what to do.

Three times David said to himself: Why are you disquieted within me? Three times he was led to praise God because in God alone was hope: the assurance of our soul, Hebrews 6:19. David, like you, looked forward to seeing his Savior face to face, for I shall yet praise Him for the help of His countenance(in Hebrew: face).

This is our hope: the promise of our resurrection. When we see Jesus in person. Meanwhile, we rely on hope. God’s unchangeable word. We have come to realize when we rely on self-effort to rescue ourselves, we sink further. The sure cure for sorrow is the power of the promises of God; hope. 

We often have good reasons for grief. This is life. But, allowing ourselves to be ‘cast down’ is not helpful. In fact, self-pity works against us. We know this. But when days are at their darkest, it is difficult to see light. It is at these times we rely on God’s word. Like David, even in dark times, we praise God. I will remember where I was without you, Lord; lost, drowning in pity. Then I will remember where I am now. Heaven bound!
