Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit…1 Corinthians 6:19
Apparently, God wants us to know and understand this fact. We are the temple of the Holy Spirit! God inspires Paul to write about this truth several times in many of his letters to the churches; that is, you.
In 1 Corinthians 3:16-17 and 1 Corinthians 8:10, and again in 1 Corinthians 9:13, we are called the temple of God. Paul repeats this in 2 Corinthians 6:16 also 2 Thessalonians 2:4. In Ephesians 2:21 you are called the temple of the Lord.
Maybe this is why Paul spends some much time teaching us about righteousness and holiness. In Romans 1:17, Paul writes For in the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, the just shall live by faith (quoting Habakkuk 2:4). Paul writes about the righteousness of God 54 times. He includes this truth in every one of his letters.
Apparently, we had to be cleaned up before God could send us His Spirit. By cleaned up, we mean, made righteous—made holy. Before we were made clean, that is reborn, our righteousness was as filthy rags. The Bible says so, but we are all like an unclean thing, and all our righteousness are like filthy rags, Isaiah 64:6a. That was before we were made clean. Back then we relied on our own righteousness. But not anymore. Now, we have the righteousness of Christ Jesus because we are in Him and He is in us by His Spirit.
This is truly amazing grace. Not because of who we were; in spite of who we were, Jesus died and rose again so He could give us His righteousness. Not because of what we have done, but because of God’s great mercy we have been made His temple. May God help us live up to this amazing opportunity!
