Train up a child…Proverbs 22:6
We have looked at this verse before. Determining God oversees His people. Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. It implies a partnership with God. We train, God oversees.
Our training of the child implies two things. First, there is a proper way for the child to go; God’s way. Second, there is a way for each child to go. Each way is different for each child. All parents know how different their children are from each other. Even twins can be different; very different. So, our training for each child should be unique to that child. Not that it is wholly different from our other children. But each aspect of training will vary with each child.
That being said, as teachers of our children, there is an implied continued education on our part. Many occupations require continued education. The special requirements of training each of our children is no different.
This implies that we as parents must continue our education in the education of our children. As they grow, our children develop different personality traits. Each requires a variation in our training. Each requires us to continue to develop our teaching abilities. This is where the church can help.
A good Sunday school is a good start. Regular Bible studies are also necessary. Constant and consistent prayer is also needed. Working together we can help each other train up every child in the way he/she should go. Teaching is a good way to learn.
