I will pour…Zechariah 12:10

In chapter 12 of Zechariah, God reveals His displeasure with Israel, the burden of the word of the LORD against Israel. Thus says the LORD, who stretches out the heavens, lays the foundation of the earth and forms the spirit of man within him, verse 1. God reminds His people that He is Creator of all that exists, in heaven and on earth. He also reminds them He is their Creator who forms the spirit of man.

Compare that with what God promises in verse 10: And I will pour on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace… What a promise! God, who gave us our spirit will give us His grace. He promises to pour His graces; not sprinkle grace, but pour. There is a huge difference between sprinkling a little salt on our food and pouring salt. A little salt is good; too much is uneatable. The opposite is true of grace. A little grace is good. Grace upon grace is great!

God kept His promise. Not only daily with the house of David, but in its fullness in Jerusalem. Luke recorded this event in Acts, chapter 2, verses 1 thru 4. And they were filled with the Holy Spirit, verse 4. The result was the preaching of the good news of Jesus’ resurrection in words every inhabitant of Jerusalem understood in their own language.

On that day, filled with the Holy Spirit, the first disciples of Jesus Christ began to turn the world upside down. Upside down from their perspective. But from God’s point-of-view, right-side-up. It is time to preach the gospel for the world is returning to being up-side-down.

We need to do this because the Day of the Lord is coming when they will look upon Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son…Verse 10. Soon, the world will see Jesus who was pierced of its sin. They will regret their rejection as God mourned the death of His only Son. Soon, God will again pour His Spirit upon His people, grace upon grace. Receive Him.
