Foolishness

They are in great fear…Psalm 14:5

The fool has said in his heart, there is no God. Psalm 14:1. It is foolish to declare oneself an atheist. For to know for certain there is no God, one would have to possess all knowledge. In addition, one would have to be able to be everywhere at the same time. Only then, one could be absolutely certain God was not somewhere else. They would have to become god to denounce God.

Which is what many people have done. They have made the leap of faith there is no God having accepted what another person has said without question. They made this leap because being an agnostic is harder. Remaining steadfast in one’s ignorance is exhausting. It requires denouncing all wisdom all day long. Worse, it requires fighting against those who do believe. Ridicule is hard work.

Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call on the Lord? Psalm 14:4. This is what God sees, verses 2 & 3. For this reason, says God, they are in great fear, for God is with the generation of the righteous, verse 5. King David laments the foolishness of his day. As do you.

But there is hope, verse 7: Oh, that the salvation of Israel would come out Zion! When the LORD brings back His captive people. Let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad. Salvation has come out of Zion. Salvation has come and He has set the captives free and more…The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, Because the Lord has anointed Me to preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives,
And the opening of the prison to those who are bound; To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,
Isaiah 61:1-2a

This is how the Salvation of the Lord began His ministry. These words were claimed by Jesus in Nazareth as belonging to Him, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.” Luke 4:21. And is still being fulfilled to this day. Jesus is still being preached, He is still healing the brokenhearted, He is still proclaiming liberty to those imprisoned by their foolishness living in great fear.
