A Sure Foundation
Jesus the resurrection…Acts 4:2
Preaching Jesus resurrected from the dead brings one of two reactions: rejection or acceptance. When Peter and John preached in the temple the resurrection of Jesus 5,000 men believed. Their preaching and their healing in the temple did not please the religious rulers of Israel, verses 5 thru 7.
Peter and John attributed the miracle to the power of the name of Jesus, verse 10, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead. The reality of the resurrection moves your faith from dead to living; from weakness to strength. Because you are those who accepted Jesus. And in doing so were saved: nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved, verse 12.
Because Jesus is the cornerstone predicted by the prophet Isaiah, verse 11. Peter quotes Isaiah 28:16: Therefore, this says the Lord God: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation. Whoever believes will not act hastily.”
We notice how contemporary are Isaiah’s words: whoever believes will not act hastily. Those who believe do so by considerable thought. You did not ‘jump to your conclusion’ as if you made an unreasonable ‘leap of faith.’ Those who reject do so because they suppress truth, they willfully refuse to believe, they took too long to believe. Their hearts became just too hard to believe. You did not.
Your faith is built on the solid foundation of truth. Jesus really lived. He actually died on the cross. He did, in fact, rise from the grave on the third day. On these truths you did not stumble. You live in the reality of the resurrection of your Lord Jesus Christ. Your faith has a sure foundation!
