Jesus said,
Away with you, Satan! Matthew 4:10
Finally, after three separate tests, Jesus sends Satan away. He sends him away with a simple command, “Away with you, Satan.” Do we have the same authority? Perhaps, James writes: Therefore, submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7. Is that the proper order of success: first, submit to God, then second, resist the devil, then third, he will flee?
In chapter 3 of Matthew gospel, Jesus is baptized by John and God speaks from heaven, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” In chapter 4, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil, verse 1. Interesting, the same Spirit that came upon Jesus when He was baptized is leading Him to be tested by the devil.
Three times the devil tests Jesus. Three times Jesus quotes the Scriptures. Test 1: Turn stone into bread. Answer: Deuteronomy 8:3. Test 2: Throw yourself off the temple. The devil turns to Scripture, Psalm 91:11. Answer: Deuteronomy 6:16. Test 3: Worship me. Answer: Deuteronomy 6:13.
Three lessons learned:
Lesson 1: When being tested, rely upon the word of God.
Lesson 2: The devil will use Scripture, even twist it to make his point. Test everything with the Bible! Test everything; hold fast to what is good, 1 Thessalonians 5:21.
Lesson 3: You will be tested. Psalm 7:9: Oh, let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish the just. For the righteous God tests the hearts and minds.
Which is repeated in 1 Thessalonians 2:4. But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts.
So, when you are led into your wilderness by The Spirit, trust God is testing your faith as by fire. Take away the dross from silver, Proverbs 25:4 and Isaiah 1:24.
