Holy Thinking
But the Spirit Himself makes intercession…Romans 8:26
By His mercy and grace, God has given us His Spirit. Not only as a seal of our redemption—not only as a Comforter, but as a Help in our time of need. Likewise, the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirt Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:26. This is God’s abounding grace. He promised He would not leave us alone. And He kept His promise. Deuteronomy 31:6 quoted in Hebrews 13:5.
Paul reminds us of God’s promise because we need reminding. Our carnal mind is at war with God, Romans 8:7. It is when our carnal mind tricks us our flesh yields to temptation. For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death, Romans 7:5. This is who we were. This is not who we are.
But there are times when we forget who we are. When we forget, our mind tricks us into thinking we have not changed. We falsely think we are that other person. This lapse in clear thinking causes us to stumble. This is when The Spirit helps us—in our time of weakness. This is when the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us. This is when God’s amazing grace kicks in—when God hears the Spirit praying for us. When this happens, we are reminded of who we are.
We have died to sin. Again, Paul explains, For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God, Colossians 3:3. But that is not all Paul wrote: If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory, verses 1 thru 4.
Notice Paul’s instruction: Set your mind on things above, not on things on earth Walking with God is a mind-set. A wholly, holy new way of thinking.
