The New Testament
I will make a new covenant…Jeremiah 31:31
For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins, Matthew 26:18. God promised this day by the prophet Jeremiah. Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah—I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts, verses 31 & 32
Jesus fulfills this promise. It appears the New Testament does not begin with the birth of Jesus, but with His death. This makes the two extra pages in our Bible—The Old Testament—The New Testament, misleading. The gospels mark the end of a very long silence; not the end of a covenant.
Combine these words with those recorded in Ezekiel 36:26 and we have the full gospel. I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you. I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. Jesus fulfills this promise.
Perhaps we would understand Scripture better if we saw them as one long progressive revelation. Perhaps it would be better to stop looking at the Bible as The Old and The New, but as The Word of God; from Genesis to Revelation.
Jesus is doing what the Father promised. He is giving people a new heart. A heart for truth. A heart receptive to the Holy Spirit. The Spirit of promise. By His grace, we have had a much-needed heart transplant. Our old heart, which was hard against God, has been replaced with a new heart, which is soft toward God. Evil has been cut away, just as God promised. We are living, breathing testaments to the washing of regeneration of God’s grace. We are a new testament transformed by His blood.
