Little ones who believe in Me…Mark 9:42

Three witnesses: Matthew, Mark, and Luke record these words of caution by Jesus: But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea. Mark 9:42, Matthew 18:6 and Luke 17:1. While this may discourage some from teaching Sunday School, it should inspire us all. Children need a firm foundation of truth to withstand the lies in this world. Tragically, some of the lies can come from within the “church.” That is, the “church” that is not the Church.

One of those lies is reformed fatalism. This false doctrine teaches the idea that God, before the world was created, determined the end of salvation and the means of salvation. Though they claim this is not fatalism, it is. If God predetermines how certain people will be saved then it is fatalism.

Think about it. A child, your child, comes to believe in Jesus. That child stumbles across one of these false teachers. That teacher, thinking he/she is doing the will of God, teaches your child a different gospel. This lie causes your child to stumble in their faith. In doing so, that false teacher erodes what you have done. They undermine the foundation you built. We should pray for our children. And we should pray for that teacher! 

Faith and believing go hand-in-hand. One leads to the other. Our children come to believe in Jesus because they have been taught the truth from the Bible. Their young belief grows into faith; a living faith. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God, Romans 10:17. For this reason we teach our children about Jesus, the real Jesus. We teach from the Bible, the real truth. We build in them a strong foundation. For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ, 1 Corinthians 3:11.
