Freedom
Of your own free will…Leviticus 1:3
Moses received from the Lord the rules regarding the various offerings. They were to be a free will offering. While the way the offering was to be presented to the Lord was not optional, the offering was to be of your own free will. And if you offer a sacrifice of a peace offering to the Lord, you shall offer it of your own free will, Leviticus 19:5.
Each offering for a sin, once offered to the Lord, yielded forgiveness of that sin. So, the priest shall make atonement for him concerning his sin and it shall be forgiven him, Leviticus 4:26, 4:35, 5:10, 5:13, and 19:22. It was a free will offering.
The sinner had a choice. He had a decision to make. He could remain under his sin or he could bring the appropriate offering the appropriate way and receive forgiveness. True then and true now.
Sinners have a decision to make. They can remain under the death penalty of their sin or they can come to Jesus and receive forgiveness. It is a free will choice every person must make.
With one big difference. Then each sin (notice the word is singular) had to be atoned for. Today, all our sins (plural) have been removed. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God, Romans 6:10. This truth is repeated three more times: Hebrews 7:27 and Hebrews 9:12 and Hebrews 10:10: by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Praise God. There is no longer any requirement for an offering for our sins. It is finished! What was begun by a free will offering under the commandments of the law, was completed by Jesus. What began as a free will decision to come to Jesus, remains; it is done. Do not let anyone or anything rob you of your freedom in Christ!
