Steadfast

Lest we drift away…Hebrews 2:1

An unsure hiker will drift off course. In the words of Yogi Berra, “If you don’t know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else.” But you know where you are going. Because you are following Jesus being led by His Spirit; not angels.

Strange that Hebrews warns us about following angels. Verse 5: For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels. But in Jesus, verse 8: You have put all things in subjection under his feet. For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. Angels are spirits. But not all spirits are angels. Following spirits will lead you adrift, away from your destination, “you may end up someplace else.” Not all angels are bad.

God shows us the way, Verse 2 & 3a: For if the word spoken through angels proved steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just reward, how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation… You did not neglect your opportunity to respond by faith. Therefore, you will escape the destination of the broad way leading to destruction; you have taken the narrow way leading to life. You have been sanctified, Verse 11: For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one… As long as the gospel is preached, God will continue to sanctify more people, placing them in Christ; in subjection to Jesus as King.

Our security in Christ came at great cost, Verse 17: Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Jesus, who created angels, thought being superior to angels, made Himself lower than angels, verse 9, that He might shed His blood for the sins of the world. He is our propitiation, reconciliation in the KJV, that we can be set apart (sanctified) for good works. With our destination set by God and our eyes on Jesus being led by His Holy Spirit, we should not drift away.
