Greatness
Mordecai, was great among the Jews…Esther 10:3
And King Ahasuerus imposed tribute on the land and on the islands of the sea.Now all the acts of his power and his might, and the account of the greatness of Mordecai, to which the king advanced him, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia? For Mordecai the Jew was second to King Ahasuerus, and was great among the Jews and well received by the multitude of his brethren, seeking the good of his people and speaking peace to all his countrymen. Esther 10
What makes a person great? According to the Bible, Mordecai was second to King Ahasuerus. Also according to the Bible: Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus (also known as Xerxes) this was the Ahasuerus who reigned over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces, from India to Ethiopia,Esther 1:1 The same King Ahasuerus who got rid of his wife, Queen Vashti, because she refused his command to attend the king’s party, which lasted 128 days!
Because of Vashti’s refusal, Esther became queen to Ahasuerus. Because of the counsel of Mordecai Queen Esther was able to save the Jews from annihilation. Because of God’s promise to Abraham the Jews remain. They also remain under the constant threat of destruction. Which brings us to the question: what makes a person great? The answer is in Esther, chapter 10, verse 3. For Mordecai the Jew was second to King Ahasuerus, and was great among the Jews and well received by the multitude of his brethren, seeking the good of his people and speaking peace to all his countrymen.
King Ahasuerus was an evil man. Even so, God’s man, Mordecai, was his second in command. The king may have ruled the world of his day, but Mordecai served God. Mordecai did not allow his great position in the king’s court to overshadow his service to God. He did the opposite. Mordecai sought the good of his people. Mordecai spoke peace to his countrymen, especially the Jews.
