In Him shall the Gentiles trust…Isaiah 42:4
The Jews should have recognized Jesus as their Messiah. To show this truth, Matthew quotes from Isaiah, chapter 42. Isaiah 42:4 is quoted in Matthew 12:21: And in His name Gentiles will trust. Matthew is quoting from the Septuagint: He shall sine out, and shall not be discouraged, until he have set judgement on the earth: and in His name Gentiles shall trust. (Brenton’s Septuagint Translation)
Modern English translations of Isaiah 42 are not based upon the Septuagint (LXX). Of these only the NIV comes close to the Septuagint: He will not falter or be discouraged till he establishes justice on earth. In his teaching the islands will put their hope. The New King James reads: He will not fail nor be discouraged, till He has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands shall wait for His law.
Matthew also quotes from verses 1 thru 4 from Isaiah 42. Matthew is proclaiming Jesus as the “Servant” chosen by God upon whom God has put His Spirit, verse 18. Which could be the reason Jesus reads from Isaiah 61: The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me because He has anointed Me. He has sent Me to preach glad tidings to the poor, to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, Luke 4:18
In the beginning God declared who Christ would be—what He would do—what He would say—where He would be born—how He would die and why! Truly, there is nothing new under the sun.
